GLOBAL CITIZENSHIP
Thinking beyond the boundaries of our birth.
With technology and globalization accelerating rapidly in recent days, more people are interested in embracing the movement of global citizenship.
With technology and globalization accelerating rapidly in recent days, more people are interested in embracing the movement of global citizenship. Unlike the conventional conception of citizenship, which fixates one’s identity to the ground of a nation’s territory, global citizenship promotes “humanity” as its soul. But what is global citizenship really, and how has the concept become popular?
Being a citizen is more than just than owning a passport. Citizenship strengthens one’s civic engagements to a nation and often grants the person political, social, and economical rights. It can also be regarded as legal proof of one’s existence in that country. Many scholars and experts regard citizenship as a status of one’s rights and duties to a nation. As this status gives the person access to rights and privileges, it also puts the person as a subject to existing regulations that help structure that person’s life and also influence one’s identity.
As the world has become smaller, incomes more portable, and lifestyles more global, the concept of citizenship has expanded broadly. Nowadays, a person can relocate freely to any part of the world in search of a better life with relative ease if they choose to. They can move either for work or business, fall in love with someone from another part of the world, or decide to invest their money somewhere which offers greater promise of return. Individuals are free to switch citizenships, or better yet opt for a second, third or even forth citizenship. This can be accomplished by naturalization, heritage or the ever more popular route of Citizenship by Investment.
As global lifestyles have become ever more popular within the past decades, most countries now allow their citizens to have multiple citizenships. This allows those lucky enough to have dual or multiple citizenship more freedom and flexibilities moving from one country to another. This condition brings more opportunities and benefits to the person with dual or multiple citizenships to exercise their civic privileges anytime they want. It is from this concept that global citizenship is bound. Having more options in life is naturally better than having fewer options. Countries continue to realize and appreciate the value these global citizens with world views & networks provide to their societies, economies & futures.
Advancement flourishes quicker in open societies verses those contained within a tight rigid fist. One need not look farther than the contrast between North Korea and South Korea for clarity.
Simply put, the grounded ideology for global citizenship is humanity. Humanity encourages people to connect with one another on a more intimate level. Sharing experiences, strategies & knowledge from the far corners of the globe. It also strengthens social connections, cultivates empathy, enhances senses, and sharpen one’s analytical and evaluative skills. In a broader aspect, many believe that the concept in becoming a global citizen promotes more diversity, equality, peace, human rights, and sustainability at global level. The world is no longer just a playground, but a place without limit to grow, influence and sustain humanity, wealth and wisdom.
